3-MEC is an abbreviation of 3-Methylethcathinone and is chemically similar to methcathinone. It is a synthetic substance and is considered to be stimulant and enactogen drug of the amphetamine, phenethylamine and cathinone class.
3 MEC is chemically a substituted cathinone where the cathinones are the sub-class of amphetamines. It consists of the same core amphetamine skeleton whereas it undergoes methyl substitution at R4 position and ethyl group substitution at RN position.
3-MEC is being marketed as a single substance or in combination of other substituted cathinones commonly known as “NRG-2”, and also “NRG-1”.
It has been sold in replacement to mephedrone (4-mmc) after it was banned. It can be purchased online, as it has become available in 2010. In 2011, it has become more commonly available as a powder form, or in powder products in which the active component isn’t mentioned, and used in some “NRG-2” samples, although their tablet form is also reported.
There are some reports that support the speculation that it has been used as an active ingredient in fake “Ecstasy/XTC” pills in countries, such as Newzealand.
It has been found that it is less likely to cause physical addiction, so withdrawal symptoms are not life threatening and minimal in severity. But consumers have reported psychological addiction to this drug.
3-MEC possesses a psychoactive effect. A little have been known about the pharmacological activity of 3 MEC, as the data of human use is not extensively available. The activity of substituted cathinone class of enactogenic and stimulant drugs exerts their action by acting as a dopamine re-uptake inhibitor.
The agonistic effect on this receptor set is responsible for an increased rate of firing of post – synaptic neurons, and triggers both the cognitive and physical stimulation within the individual.
